A Villa Park woman accused of violating a city ordinance by feeding ducks in her backyard must stand trial, a judge ruled Friday.

Judy Simons had asked that the misdemeanor case against her be dismissed. Orange County Superior Court Judge John Conley denied her request and set June 19 as her trial date but requested a conference May 30 to discuss settling the case.

The city passed an ordinance in May 1999 restricting the feeding of wild birds. That action followed complaints by residents that Simons was feeding flocks of wild ducks, causing noise, excessive droppings and unsanitary conditions in the neighborhood.

City Atty. Leonard Hampel could not be reached for comment Friday.

Vincent LaBarbera, who represents Simons, said she no longer feeds the ducks, though some still come around. At one time she set out 50 to 75 pounds of corn daily for as many as 600 ducks.
