A dean at the University of Alaska has been selected as the founding academic vice president at the Cal State Channel Islands campus near Camarillo.

Alexander W. McNeill will lead faculty in planning courses for the new university, which is expected to open next fall. His immediate tasks include recruiting another tier of faculty to supplement the 13 already chosen and completing a catalog of classes by December, university officials said.

McNeill, chosen out of a pool of 70 applicants, was tapped from the College of Health, Education and Social Welfare at the University of Alaska in Anchorage. In coming months, Cal State officials will select another four vice presidents and campus officers.
