An 18-month-old Ontario boy drowned Sunday after he climbed up several stairs and fell into a backyard spa, authorities said.

The boy, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at 6:40 p.m. at Chino Valley Medical Center, about 75 minutes after Ontario Fire Department paramedics were called to the home in the 2800 block of South Whispering Lakes Lane, Fire Capt. Louie Guapo said.

“It appears to be a baby left unattended,” he said. The boy’s parents did not know how long the child was in the spa before he was found, Guapo said.

When paramedics arrived, they found Nancy Van Lul of Upland, an emergency room nurse at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, trying to revive the boy with CPR.

Van Lul was called to the home by a neighbor. She said she was unable to get the child breathing again.
