The eighth annual World Animation Celebration, billed as the country’s biggest animation festival, runs through Sunday, featuring screenings of state-of-the-art work from around the world. In addition to daily screenings of films in competition, the festival includes salutes to the latest animation from Britain and Canada as well as behind-the-scenes looks at the making of “Stuart Little,” the upcoming “Spider-Man” and this summer’s “Shrek.” Tonight’s highlight is “New Shorts and Entertainment From Aardman Animations,” a big-screen visit with the studio that created the “Wallace and Gromit” shorts and “Chicken Run.” A daily entertainment market will be held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, and industry seminars will be conducted at the Knitting Factory.

Patti Smith’s uncompromising art and pioneering work for women in rock is reason enough to check out her show at the Roxy tonight, but this is no nostalgia act--the punk poet has found a creative second wind in recent years, and her recent work, including last year’s “Gung Ho,” shows the same fierce will and social consciousness that made Smith a revolutionary force.
