Public Comment Sought on Plans to Protect Bird
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking public input on a plan to help protect the threatened Western snowy plover.
About 225 of the birds spend their breeding seasons at McGrath, Ormond and Hollywood beaches, as well as at Point Mugu and the mouth of the Santa Clara River.
There are an additional 330 of the birds scattered on four of the Channel Islands.
Biologists plan to remove the plover from the threatened list if the population maintains an average of 3,000 breeding adults on the West Coast.
The federal agency will hold its first public workshop Sept. 18 at the Radisson Hotel, 1111 E. Cabrillo Blvd., Santa Barbara.
