Officials from the International Committee of the Red Cross entered a detention center in the Afghan capital, Kabul, to visit eight foreign aid workers jailed three weeks ago on charges of promoting Christianity, witnesses said.

Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban were believed to have agreed to let six Red Cross employees make private visits to four Germans, two Australians and two Americans of the German-based Christian relief agency Shelter Now International, who were arrested along with 16 Afghan employees of the agency, the witnesses added.

Meanwhile, diplomats from the United States, Australia and Germany said they expect to be granted visas from Afghanistan on Tuesday to visit the workers.
