Karl Ulrich Schnabel, 92, the son of famed pianist Artur Schnabel and himself a pianist and music teacher, died Monday at his home in Danbury, Conn.

Schnabel taught master classes in Europe, Asia and in North and South America. He began teaching at age 13, preparing students who wanted to study with his father.

The son was born in Berlin in 1909 and began playing piano at age 5. He studied with Leonid Kreutzer at the State Academy of Music from 1922 to 1928, debuting in Berlin in 1926 and appearing with orchestras around the world.

The Schnabels left Germany when Adolf Hitler rose to power and became American citizens in 1944. In 1950, Karl Ulrich Schnabel’s book, “Modern Technique of the Pedal,” was published.

He performed successively with his father; his American wife, Helen Fogel; and with Canadian pianist Joan Rowland.
