Government Reports Heavy Rebel Casualties
Nepal said its troops inflicted heavy casualties on Maoist rebels in an intense offensive against insurgents trying to topple the constitutional monarchy.
“The Royal Nepal army fired from helicopters and inflicted heavy casualties on Friday,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
It did not say how many rebels were killed in the attack in forests of the Rolpa and Jajarkot districts in western Nepal, a rebel stronghold.
A ministry spokesman said attacks by helicopter gunships on hide-outs and training camps belonging to the rebels, which started Monday, were continuing.
