Term-Limit Limitations

Share

I have always been opposed to legislatively mandated term limits (“Hahn Vetoes Ballot Measure on Term Limits,” Nov. 29). I would rather have the voters use the ballot box to directly and selectively limit the number of terms that any elected official serves. Term limits are arbitrary and diminish the public’s right to vote for the candidate of choice. Tenure in office is neither an argument for nor an argument against reelection; performance in office is.

If people want to factor length of service into their electoral decisions they can do so without arbitrarily limiting their choices. Simply require that ballot information indicate the number of terms that a candidate has already served.
