Eighty-four people were rescued from an American oil rig adrift in a storm in the Mediterranean Sea off Israel.

U.S., Israeli, British and Cypriot helicopters ferried the 84 to the U.S. destroyer Ross, which took them to the Israeli port of Haifa, said Paul Patin, spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Israel.

The Key Singapore, owned by Global Santa Fe International Corp., was being towed to a new drilling site Monday when it broke from its cables in the storm. That night, it began to break up, Patin said.
