Sen. Strom Thurmond plans to quietly celebrate his 99th birthday as the oldest member of Congress ever.

Senate Republicans at their weekly luncheon sang “Happy Birthday” to Thurmond, who said: “I love all of you and if you’re women, I love you even more.”

Thurmond, who recently moved into Walter Reed Army Medical Center to have his health monitored, said in a statement that he looked forward to a final year in Congress before retirement.
