President Goes North to Dine With Rival

Greek Cypriot President Glafcos Clerides crossed to the north of Cyprus for the first time in decades, celebrating a thaw on the divided island by dining with Turkish Cypriot President Rauf R. Denktash.
Hailed by Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, who was visiting Turkey, the rapprochement offers the hope of a solution to the decades-old disagreement between Turkey and Greece over Turkey’s occupation of the north. The dispute has threatened plans to expand the European Union.
