Sales of Cell Phones Predicted to Hit Target

Motorola Inc. said it still expects industrywide sales of mobile phones at the low end of its range of 380 million to 400 million for the full year 2001.

The forecast was consistent with the estimate of the world’s largest mobile phone maker, Nokia, of 380 million units late last month.

Mike Zafirovski, president of Motorola’s personal communications sector, which makes the phones, also told investors at a Lehman Bros. telecommunications conference in Florida that growth in the wireless industry should resume in 2002 after a slowing economy in 2001 hurt sales.

Shares of Motorola, the second-largest mobile phone maker, fell 59 cents to $17.30 on the NYSE.
