A Dec. 1 article by Bill Christine contained a little-heralded tagline that told of action by the California Horse Racing Board to allow advertising on jockey silks and saddlecloths. I am appalled and disappointed.

I can hear it now. Premier track announcer Trevor Denman: “And away they go with Target gaining a short advantage.” Then late in the race: “Lexus is widening his lead, looking like he just jumped in at the quarter pole.” The late, great Joe Hernandez saying, “ ... and here comes Marlboro.” And finally, Dave Johnson yelling, “And down the stretch they come, with Verizon gaining a half-length lead.”

So horse racing is leaving the Pomona Fairplex. The exposure to new customers that the sport got from being involved with the County Fair was invaluable.

Once again the horse racing industry is its own worst enemy. Is it any wonder the tracks are ghost towns as compared to 10 years ago?
