Councilwoman Espinosa

Share

It is with a heavy heart that I read your article concerning Santa Paula’s decision to again snub Councilwoman Laura Espinosa. Members of the council had an opportunity to respond to criticism that they only represent half the community by electing Ms. Espinosa as mayor.

I can’t say that I am shocked, because I understand the small-town, good-old-boy mentality of the council. I saw my father battle what I deemed institutional racism for many years. He continues to work for the betterment of all people in Santa Paula, as does Ms. Espinosa.

Those who know her speak of her as a champion for the Mexican-American people of Santa Paula. Your article brought home many feelings that I had hoped to suppress by leaving Santa Paula, and I can see that the work necessary to bring about change is never finished.

Ms. Laura, keep doing what you are doing. We applaud you for being gracious enough to keep your dignity, even though those around you have none.
