From Times Staff Reports

Two defendants smirked and grinned during their Los Angeles federal court proceedings, rising at times to tell the judge he had no authority over them.

But U.S. District Judge Ronald S.W. Lew had the last word Tuesday, sentencing Louis Ziskin to 30 years in prison and co-defendant Alex Maimon to 24 years and four months for smuggling nearly 700 pounds of the drug Ecstasy into the United States.

Ziskin, 33, of Los Angeles, Maimon, 30, of Miami Beach, Fla., and a third defendant, DeWayne Sanker, 24, of Redlands were found guilty in a Los Angeles jury trial in April. Sanker is awaiting sentencing.
