Protestant Militant Linked to Slaying Is Fatally Shot
A Protestant militant who had been linked to one of Northern Ireland’s most notorious killings was shot to death outside his home Wednesday morning, police said.
William Stobie, 51, reportedly had been warned that members of the outlawed Ulster Defense Assn.--to which he once belonged--intended to kill him.
An outlawed group called the Red Hand Defenders claimed responsibility, but police and analysts have said the group is a cover name for UDA members.
Stobie had admitted to being a police double agent.
Last month prosecutors dropped two murder charges against him, including one involving the unsolved 1989 killing of Roman Catholic defense attorney Pat Finucane.
