EU Court Rules Against France’s British Beef Ban

France’s ban on British beef imports because of “mad cow” disease fears is a breach of European Union law, the European Court of Justice ruled.
The ruling called on the French government to implement a 1999 decision by the European Commission to lift the ban on British beef, imposed after a serious outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease.
“France has failed to fulfill its obligations by refusing to permit the marketing in its territory of correctly marked or labeled products,” the Luxembourg-based court said.
