A Frenchman who fought with Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda terrorist network was being treated in a Pakistani hospital under heavy guard after he was wounded in a U.S. airstrike, medical staff and intelligence officials said.

Pakistani intelligence officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Abdur Rehman, 21, received military training at an Al Qaeda camp six months ago and that he told interrogators 80 to 100 other French citizens were also trapped in Afghanistan.

A doctor at the hospital quoted Rehman as saying that an honorable death is better than a shameful life.

French officials said it appears Rehman is a French citizen of Algerian descent who does not usually live in France, though authorities were still checking on his identity.
