Prime Minister Resigns After Socialist Defeat

Prime Minister Antonio Guterres resigned after his Socialist Party was soundly defeated in local elections, prompting President Jorge Sampaio to consider dissolving parliament.
In its first win at the ballot box in 10 years, the main opposition, the center-right Social Democrats, won 144 councils, compared with 98 for the center-left Socialists. The Communist Party and the conservative Popular Party also won some of the 308 local councils.
