San Onofre Plant Is Exempted From Drill
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has exempted the San Onofre nuclear power plant from this year’s required multiagency emergency-response drill.
The drill, usually required every two years, had been set for Sept. 12 but was canceled because of the terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon the previous day.
Federal and state officials--from the California Highway Patrol to the Marines at nearby Camp Pendleton--participate in the drills.
The commission is urging the plant’s operator, Southern California Edison, to reschedule the drill as soon as possible.
