Hans Haekkerup, head of the U.N. administration in Kosovo, announced his resignation for personal reasons after one year in charge of the province.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan praised the 56-year-old Dane for his work to introduce a substantial degree of self-government in Kosovo, including holding last month’s successful election of a new 120-seat legislative assembly for the de facto international protectorate.

Haekkerup’s main deputy, Charles Brayshaw of the United States, will serve as interim administrator for Kosovo, a province of Serbia, Yugoslavia’s main republic.
