County May Pay Adults Leaving Foster Care

Foster care youths who leave the system at 18 could qualify for continued monthly checks under a program being considered by Ventura County supervisors.

New state legislation gives counties the option of extending payments past the typical cutoff age of 18. Foster adults are required to attend college or be enrolled in vocational training to qualify for three extra years of support.

Counties must come up with 60% of the funding, with the state picking up the balance. Human Services Agency administrators said they will try to find matching funds so the program would not be a drain on the county’s general fund.
