BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS

A variety of area events, from entertainment to rallies to a “teach-in,” are planned to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Black History Month. These include:

* An audio presentation of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech will be presented at noon Tuesday in Glendale Community College’s Plaza Vaquero, 1500 N. Verdugo Road.

* Students, faculty and staff at Cal State Northridge, 18111 Nordhoff St., will march in a demonstration of campus unity from the University Student Union to the Sierra Quad beginning at noon Wednesday.

* The subject of black reparations will be addressed Feb. 12 with a noon rally at CSUN on the Oviatt Library steps, followed by a panel discussion and debate from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Fernandeno Room of the student union.

* “Legends in Black,” a presentation of poetry, song and dance, will be presented at 1 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Northeast Valley Multipurpose Senior Center, 11300 Glenoaks Blvd., Pacoima. The program will be repeated Feb. 23 at Pierce College in Woodland Hills. For more information, call (818) 899-4357.

* The Khaley Nguewei West African Drum & Dance Troupe from Senegal will perform at noon Feb. 14 in the CSUN student union’s Grand Salon.

* A panel discussion on “African Americans and Black Radio” is planned from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Feb. 19 in the CSUN student union’s Grand Salon.

* College of the Canyons is planning a special event Feb. 20 that will include a discussion of “Unity Through Diversity” as it relates to African American heritage, a performance of African American dances by the college’s dance department and a free assortment of ethnic food from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Honor Grove, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Valencia.

* Randy St. Martin’s one-man show “Color Me Black” will be performed at noon Feb. 20 in Glendale Community College’s Plaza Vaquero.

* South African Consul Nontshukomo B. Pharma and Michael Davis, president and chief executive officer of Magic Johnson’s youth entertainment company, Magic Media, will speak at an event featuring music and food from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Antelope Valley College cafeteria, 3041 W. Ave. K, Lancaster.

* Douglass Turner Ward’s “Day of Absence” will be staged at 8 p.m. Feb. 27 in CSUN’s Performing Arts Center. The following day, Pan African Studies students will gather from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Oviatt Library’s Presentation Room for a “teach-in” led by Pan African Studies professors.
