Cliffords’ Wave Lifts Pepperdine

Junior Woody Cliffords tied a Pepperdine record with five hits and the Waves cruised past Nevada, 18-3, in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Pepperdine.

Cliffords, formerly of El Camino Real High, had two doubles and scored four times for Pepperdine (2-0), which scored five runs in the sixth inning and six in the seventh.

Noah Lowry (1-0) struck out a career-high 10 and gave up one earned run in seven innings.

Pierce 9, Canada 6--David Keesee had four hits and Ryan Cope had three for the Brahmas in a Palomar tournament victory in San Marcos.

Randy Curtis hit a two-run double for Pierce (1-0) in the first inning. Peter Gunny and Juan Sepulveda each had two hits.

Kurt Birkins (1-0) gave up three runs and three hits in the first third of an inning, but allowed no runs and no hits in the next 4 2/3 innings.

Oxnard 7, Ricks (Idaho) 0--Scott Robinson struck out eight and gave up no runs in six innings, and Omari Parker hit two doubles for Oxnard (2-0) in pool play at the Citrus tournament.

Irvine Valley 6, Moorpark 5--Josh Block had two doubles and drove in a run, but the Raiders (0-2) lost in the Orange Coast tournament.

Nick Hillman and Adam Leavitt each had two hits for Moorpark in an 11-7 loss to Saddleback earlier.

Santa Ana 7, Canyons 6--The Dons scored five runs in the eighth to win in the Harbor tournament at Santa Ana.

Harbor 14, Glendale 9--Evan Shahak had three hits, including a three-run homer in a Harbor tournament loss for the Vaqueros (0-1) at Harbor.

East L.A. 10, Valley 5--Tony Sandoval and Brett Munson each had two hits for the Monarchs (0-2) in a Harbor tournament game at East L.A.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Brigham Young def. Cal State Northridge, 30-28, 30-25, 34-32--Mike Wall had 14 kills for the Cougars in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory at Northridge.

Jaime Mayot added 13 kills and Matt Olsen, a former middle blocker at Royal High, had nine kills for BYU (5-0, 2-0).

Joe Nargi had 21 kills for Northridge (3-6, 0-4).
