Leading the Employment Charge

Temp agencies and other personnel supply services added more than 2 million jobs in the 1990s, leading the industries with the decade’s greatest employment growth, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Seven of the 10 industries adding the most jobs in the 1990s were in the services.

And while local schools and educational districts added nearly 1.4 million jobs in the 1990s, ranking third among gainers, the federal government (excluding the postal service) lost the most jobs in that period.

Other industries among the top 10 employment losers in the decade were savings institutions, aircraft and parts manufacturers and apparel retailers.
