A research firm hired by news organizations began surveying an estimated 180,000 ballots that did not register a vote for president in an effort to create an independent record of the disputed election.
The statewide review by the National Opinion Research Center, a nonprofit firm affiliated with the University of Chicago, is expected to take at least eight weeks and to cost $500,000.
The news organizations include the Associated Press, CNN, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and Tribune Publishing, which owns the Los Angeles Times.
