Business.com, the Santa Monica company that runs a business information Web site, laid off 37 workers, or 26% of it work force, in an effort to control costs and preserve cash. The company, which still has 108 employees, said it has $45 million in capital and is still on track to become profitable by mid-2002. The company raised $61 million in September and said it won’t need to raise additional funds. The layoffs “will allow Business.com to continue its mission of building the best online business resource,” said Jake Winebaum, founder and chief executive. The year-old company is the biggest venture to emerge from ECompanies, the incubator founded by former Disney executive Jake Winebaum and EarthLink founder Sky Dayton.
