Eagles Break the Press, Win the League Title

Calvary Chapel overcame Orange Lutheran’s stifling full-court press in the second half and won the Olympic League title with a 66-54 victory in a boys’ basketball game Thursday at Calvary Chapel.

The Eagles (19-5, 9-1 in league) took an early lead in the first quarter thanks to solid play by center Bryan Filkey and several baskets by Tony Olivas. Both finished with 14 points.

Orange Lutheran (12-11, 8-2) was able to make it close in the second quarter cutting Calvary Chapel’s lead to 29-28 at the end of the half. Filkey had several offensive rebound baskets to keep the Eagles ahead.

The Lancers went on a 13-0 run in third quarter, scoring several baskets off turnovers due to the full-court press. Chase Prather led Orange Lutheran in the quarter with six points on two three-pointers. The Lancers led by as many as seven before Calvary Chapel closed to within one on a three-pointer by Steven Olivas at the end of the period.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Eagles as they broke the Lancer press time after time for easy layups and free throw attempts.

Orange Lutheran was stagnant on offense in the fourth quarter forcing several wild shots from beyond the three-point line.
