Nobel Winner Called an ‘Awful Writer’

Breaking with the Chinese media’s official silence over Nobel Prize-winning author Gao Xingjian, a state newspaper called him an “awful writer” and said honoring him with the prize was “ludicrous.”
The Yangcheng Evening News assailed Gao’s “Soul Mountain” as simplistic and disappointing. China’s Communist government, which considers Gao an exiled dissident and bans his works, ignored his winning of the prize in October.
