Customs Seizes Tons of Pot

SAN DIEGO —
A tractor-trailer entering the United States from Mexico was found to be hauling nearly 9,000 pounds of marijuana, a Customs Service spokesman said Monday.
An inspector at the Otay Mesa commercial border crossing discovered the marijuana hidden among a shipment of papayas Friday, spokesman Vince Bond said.
The seizure, with a street value of about $4 million, is unusual because smugglers tend to ship smaller amounts to minimize the loss if the drugs are discovered, Bond said.
