Corso Selected Goalkeeper Coach for U.S. Olympic Team

Rich Corso, water polo coach at Harvard-Westlake High for 15 years, has been appointed goalkeeper coach for the U.S. Olympic men’s team for the 2004 Games in Athens.

Corso will continue to coach the Wolverines’ boys’ and girls’ teams. He was coach of the U.S. men’s team in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and served as goalkeeper coach for the 1984 team.

Corso, 46, will serve as an assistant under new coach Ratko Rudic.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Corso said. “It’s a chance to get back into the Olympic arena.”

TENNIS

* Bob and Mike Bryan of Camarillo, graduates of Rio Mesa High, upset No. 2-seeded Justin Gimelstob and Scott Humphries, 7-6 (3), 6-2, in the first round of the $500,000 Marseille Open indoor hard-court tournament Wednesday night in Marseille, France.

Gimelstob, a member of the U.S. Davis Cup team, and Humphries reached the doubles semifinals at the Australian Open last month.

Bob Bryan advanced to the second round in singles at Marseille.

Bryan outlasted Nicolas Escude of France, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4),6-4, in a 2-hour 45-minute match Tuesday night and plays Roger Federer of Switzerland today.

BASKETBALL

* The West Coast Waves girls’ club will hold an informational meeting at 4 p.m. on Feb. 25 at Cal Lutheran to form 17-and-under and 15-and-under teams.

SOCCER

* Jim Rickard of The Master’s College has been selected National Christian College Athlete Assn. coach of the year.

Rickard guided the Mustangs to an 18-5 record and a runner-up finish in the NCCAA tournament.

In 10 years at Master’s, Rickard has a 133-78-12 record, two NAIA tournament appearances and an NCCAA national title.

* Lake Casitas will be stocked with 2,000 pounds of rainbow trout on Tuesday.

* Lanark Park Recreation Center in Canoga Park will begin registration Saturday for spring T-ball, baseball and softball programs for children 5-15.

Cost per player is $25-$30 depending on age and division.

The fee includes jersey, hat and individual trophy.
