* Trans World Airlines Inc. pilots endorsed a plan by AMR Corp.’s American Airlines to buy the St. Louis carrier, which has filed for bankruptcy protection. AMR’s plan is a “complete, fair and sound” approach that would give stability to 20,000 TWA employees and protect the medical and retirement benefits of past employees, Air Line Pilots Assn. International said.

* Chevron Corp. said it closed its Silicon Valley Oil unit, which sold refined oil products online to businesses, because of insufficient business. The unit’s employees will be assigned to other jobs within the San Francisco-based oil company.

* Spiegel Group plans to close 25 Eddie Bauer stores this year as well as open 10 stores with merchandise that extends beyond the retailer’s traditional casual, rugged style. The company did not identify the stores to be closed or say how many employees would be affected.
