Louis Asimakis; Retired Oil Driller

Louis Asimakis, a retired oil driller and longtime resident of Ventura County, died Feb. 14 after a long battle with cancer. He was 88.

He was born on Dec. 12, 1912, in Bakersfield and lived in Ventura County for the past 58 years.

Asimakis worked his way up from roughneck to driller in the Ventura oil fields. He retired in 1972 from Shell Oil Co., after 32 years in the petroleum industry.

After retiring he worked with his partner, the late Dr. Walter Moser, in the commercial growing of bird of paradise flowers.

He also worked for his longtime friend, John Taft, to establish the Center for Earth Concerns in Ojai.

In 1993, he won the Super Lotto and he and his wife, Geraldine, enjoyed traveling around the world several times.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

He is survived by daughter Dorothy “Dottie” Asimakis of Ambridge, Pa.; son Pete Asimakis of Merlin, Ore., and granddaughter Cindy Anderson of Klamath Falls, Ore.

In accordance with his wishes, no services are planned.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Center for Earth Concerns, Louis Asimakis Memorial Garden, 2162 Baldwin Road, Ojai, CA 93023. A dedication service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Center for Earth Concerns, 2162 Baldwin Road, Ojai.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
