City Council Refuses to Fill Goldberg Seat

The Los Angeles City Council on Friday rejected a second attempt to appoint Jackie Goldberg’s former chief of staff to serve out the remainder of the ex-councilwoman’s term.
City lawmakers said Friday that they would prefer to appoint whoever wins in the upcoming election to finish out the last few months of Goldberg’s term, which expires June 30. If there is no clear winner in the April 10 election, council members said, they will appoint the winner of the June 5 runoff. Goldberg was elected to the state Assembly.
Her former chief of staff, Sharon Delugach, is not running for the council seat but has sought to fill the post temporarily.
American Civil Liberties Union officials said Friday that they intend to seek a court order to force the council to immediately fill the seat.
