One’s ‘Myth’ Is Another’s Religion

[The article] discussing the $30-million budget the Catholic Church has for the new downtown cathedral’s artwork [“Hallowed Be Their Art,” Feb. 11] reports not one dissenting voice for this project. Surely you could have found someone in Los Angeles to quote who is critical of this incredible expenditure for Cardinal Roger Mahony’s new edifice. Also, the author refers to the Native American “myth of creation” but does not use minimalizing terms like that in the rest of the story when discussing Catholic beliefs such as angels, Christ’s death on the cross, etc.

There are those who feel that $30 million could be put to a lot better use than interior decorating, and that Catholicism’s ancient “myths” should not necessarily be presented as “fact” to your audience.
