The father of slain 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey said he surprised a burglar in his home Tuesday and “scuffled” with the man before the intruder fled.

John Ramsey received some cuts and bruises and an injury to his left eye, said his physician, Richard Kauffman. He was able to call police minutes after the intruder left.

“I’m fine,” Ramsey said.

Atlanta police said they didn’t know whether the intruder knew Ramsey was the father of JonBenet, who was killed in her Boulder, Colo., home in 1996. Her parents moved to Atlanta after the slaying.

The Ramseys remain under suspicion in their daughter’s death. They have said they believe an intruder killed the girl.

Ramsey said he returned home from an errand to discover a car in the driveway and locked doors upstairs. No one else was supposed to be home.

“I confronted the guy in the hallway,” Ramsey said. “He had a bag of mine and I said, ‘Give it to me.’ He wouldn’t give it to me. I turned around to say I was going to call police. He jumped me and we scuffled for what seemed like a long time.”

Ramsey said he saw the man leaving with two large bags but didn’t know what was in them.
