The Alliance to Save Energy, a coalition of business, government, environmental and consumer advocates that promote efficient and clean use of energy, is urging homeowners who are refinancing to consider wrapping energy-efficient home improvements into their new mortgage with a view toward reducing monthly energy bills and conserving the nation’s energy supply.

“With energy costs rising and demand exceeding supplies, now is a great time for consumers to improve the energy efficiency of their home and obtain the advantage of tax-deductible interest on these upgrades,” said David M. Nemtzow, president of the group.

Today’s energy-efficient technologies decrease home energy bills and energy use, increase home comfort and decrease pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, according to the group.

The group advises homeowners to look first at their heating and air conditioning systems and thermostats, then energy “leaks”--appliances, hot water heaters and home electronics.

A programmable thermostat is one option. Energy leaks can be minimized with new caulking, weather stripping, insulation and energy-efficient windows. The group suggests consumers purchase products with the Energy Star label, a sign of energy efficiency.
