Calmus Spending Time in Film Room

Share

Oklahoma junior linebacker Rocky Calmus was a first-team All-American, led the Sooners in tackles with 125 and may be the best linebacker at the school since you-know-who.

That’s right, Brian Bosworth.

With 42 tackles for losses in his career, Calmus has already surpassed Bosworth’s school record of 39.

Calmus, who grew up in Jenks, Okla., says he was a big fan of Bosworth, who led the Sooners in tackles from 1984-86.

“There was nothing like him,” Calmus said. “I just try to be the best I can be every day. He had the mentality and was a vicious hitter.”

Calmus must be a fan. He has acknowledged seeing the panned Bosworth film, “Stone Cold,” more than once.

“I’ve seen it,” Calmus said. “It’s not bad for an ex-football player.”

Calmus says Bosworth has been very supportive of this year’s squad.

“He’s come and talked to the team,” Calmus said. “He’s talked to me and given me tips. He’s been very encouraging.”

Bobby Bowden’s advice to offensive coordinator Mark Richt, leaving after the Orange Bowl to become coach at Georgia:

“Don’t cheat, don’t cheat,” Bowden said. “Mark’s not a cheater. Don’t worry about that. I worry more about [sons] Tommy and Terry. They took that from their mother.”

News flash: Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks have only a 6-5 record in bowl games since 1956.

“With no disrespect to the Heisman, I could care less about it right now,” Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke, this year’s Heisman winner, said. “My focus is on this game. If we can find a way to win, it will put a stamp of validation on the Heisman. It might also make a few of those who thought I didn’t deserve to win it feel differently.”

Howard Schnellenberger, who coached Oklahoma to a disastrous 5-5-1 record in 1995 before resigning under pressure, is back in the coaching business.

Schnellenberger, more noted for leading Miami to its first national title in 1983, is the first coach at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

If you’re interested in season tickets, Schnellenberger’s Owls make their Division I-AA debut Sept. 1 against Slippery Rock at Pro Player Stadium.
