* Re “A President for Our Dumbed-Down Times,” Commentary, Dec. 31: Doug Gamble’s conclusion to the question of “how people will react to a President Bush being one of the poorest communicators ever to hold the Oval Office--a man whose lips are where words go to die” is not the conclusion I came to after reading his commentary. He feels that “most Americans will become as soothingly conditioned to a stumbling, bumbling President Bush as they were to a roguish President Clinton,” and Democrats should not start planning Hillary Clinton’s inaugural any time soon.

I don’t agree that George W. Bush’s shallow intellect perfectly reflects an increasingly dumbed-down America. I think Americans are smart enough to start preparations for Hillary Clinton or any other qualified woman to aspire to the presidency. It’s time for voters to get the leaders they deserve and a perfect time to give a good woman the chance to elevate the office of the presidency.

The presidential inauguration on Jan. 20 will usher in a new political era of Calvin Coolidge revisited. On the executive level the American people will be ruled by a competent Cabinet, and President Bush will go fishing with his father.
