O’Hair Case Suspect Convicted
A suspect in the disappearance of atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair was convicted Wednesday of using a false Social Security number to lease a storage unit where investigators believe O’Hair and her family were dismembered.
Gerald Lee Osborne, 50, faces up to five years in prison at sentencing March 9.
O’Hair, her son Jon Garth Murray and her granddaughter and adopted daughter Robin Murray O’Hair disappeared from San Antonio along with $500,000 in gold coins in 1995. No bodies have been found, but authorities believe they were killed.
Authorities said Osborne rented an Austin storage unit in 1995 for David Waters, a former office manager for O’Hair.
Prosecutors have not charged Osborne with participating in the disappearance. He was arrested in 1999 on an unrelated gun charge.
Waters, 53, is serving 60 years in state prison for parole violations related to a conviction of stealing more than $50,000 from O’Hair’s office in 1995. He also is serving time in federal prison on weapons charges.
