Bodyboarder Tragedy

* I am not a lifeguard but I have swum in the ocean and surfed for most of my life in Southern California. I have even had the opportunity to save a foundering ocean novice who did not pay attention to the most important rules before entering the ocean in the winter: 1) Have a great respect for the ocean and be aware of its power; 2) Be certain and confident in your swimming abilities; 3) Always wear a wetsuit in the winter; 4) As the lifeguards always remind, swim and surf near a manned lifeguard tower.

Every winter I read of tragedies like the death of Juan Jose Mejia Jr. (Jan. 3), and my heart goes out to his family and friends. I hope others who love the ocean as I do will keep this accident in mind and with a bit of preparation will keep themselves safe and alive.
