Position: Adopt-a-Highway Volunteer

Description: Each year, volunteers collect more than 61% of California’s roadside litter, filling 28.5 million bags. Many also plant wildflowers and trees and remove graffiti.

Ensemble: White hard hat with logo; orange safety vest. Perfectly accessorized with a bright orange litter bag.

Style Notes: Volunteer groups usually adopt a two-mile section of freeway for a two-year period. Caltrans honors each group with a blue-and-white sign alongside the section of adopted highway.

Position: Caltrans Maintenance Highway Worker

Description: Caltrans employees responsible for the cleaning and repair of 6,440 lane miles of highways (each mile of roadway multiplied by the number of lanes), 1,279 lane miles of freeway ramps and frontage roads and 4,106 miles of freeway shoulders.

Ensemble: White hard hat with Caltrans logo; orange safety vest.

Style Notes: Caltrans now offers the option of a lime-green vest, shown, as an alternative to the traditional orange model. Both are manufactured for Caltrans by the Prison Industry Authority.

Position: Special Program Worker

Description: Criminal offenders who volunteer to clean up litter as part of their sentence. Only nonviolent probationers and inmates are eligible; no felons.

Ensemble: Orange hard hat with no logo; orange safety vest.

Style Notes: Supervised constantly by Caltrans personnel, these Special Program Workers provide more than $10 million annually in service to California, and help reduce jail crowding.
