30 Killed, Scores Hurt in Train Collision

Rescuers were sifting through wreckage in search of bodies after two freight trains collided in the Republic of Congo in east-central Africa. At least 30 people were killed and nearly 100 injured. Transportation Ministry officials said the brakes of one of the trains failed as the trains approached the same station in the morning from different directions along the line linking the capital, Brazzaville, to the port city of Pointe-Noire. The trains did not have radio communications, state-run radio reported. By afternoon, 30 bodies had been recovered. Although neither train officially accepted passengers, people routinely ride clandestinely along the 315-mile line.
