‘Worldwide Caution’ From State Department
Is it safe to travel anywhere anymore? As the year opens, new State Department missives can make one wonder.
On Jan. 5, the department issued a “worldwide caution” saying it “remains concerned about the possibility for terrorist actions against United States citizens and interests throughout the world.” American travelers are advised to “remain vigilant,” keep a low profile and “avoid contact with any suspicious, unfamiliar objects.” The announcement is effective for an unusually long time, to June 7.
Another addition to the “caution” list was the Philippines. An announcement, effective to April 5, cites “violent incidents,” including bombs that exploded Dec. 30 at the Manila airport, killing 18 people, and hostage-taking by the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group. It urged Americans to avoid crowds.
