Energy Crisis
Alan Pasternak’s analysis of the source of our current electricity predicament is right on the money (“We’re Paying the Price for Bad Energy Decisions of Years Past,” Opinion, Jan. 7). Our electricity legacy was squandered in pandering to special interests that demanded no more nuclear plants, no more hydroelectric dams and no more burning fossil fuels.
Yes, we need clear lines of responsibility. The free market does not have the “obligation to serve”; that is a requirement of a regulated utility. We also need a major construction program within the state so that the sources of power fall under our control. That means at least new gas-fired power plants, and if we care at all about global warming, it means building the next generation of nuclear units as well.
