Explosion May Be Linked to Outage

Power was knocked out to 3,000 residents of Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Corona del Mar Sunday morning, possibly as a result of an explosion disabling a transformer, Southern California Edison officials said.

“We had a switch fail about 6:30 this morning,” said Edison spokesman Steve Hansen. He said the cause of the failure was still under investigation. The transformer that failed is at Pacific Coast Highway and Camino Highlands Drive in Huntington Beach.

Edison was able to restore power to most customers within 40 minutes, but about 70 homes were without power for more than six hours, Hansen said.

“We have to replace that piece of equipment, and that takes time,” he said.
