I Didn’t Know That...

Q: Why are some medicines taken with food and others on an empty stomach?

A: Although most medicines are swallowed, they have to get into the bloodstream to reach their target, whether it is an infected ear or a swollen joint. They must thus be absorbed through the digestive system. Most drugs get into the system faster if the stomach and the small intestine are empty. Others, however, irritate the stomach lining when no food is present, so doctors advise taking them with meals. All medicines should be taken with water, which lubricates the esophagus, helps the pills break down, and may help protect the stomach lining.
