FRESHWATER

Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LAKE--Only a few largemouths and stripers have been caught in the Last week. Trout action is fair and a DFG plant should perk that bite. Best largemouth baits have been spoons, ice jigs, or shad-like plastics in deeper water. Live shad are very good if you can dip some. Some stripers biting on big trout-like plugs and swimbaits. Erik Stepanek, Castaic, landed an 11-pound 7-ounce striper on an A.C. Plug Minnow.

PYRAMID LAKE--The trout bite has been fair to good and there was a DFG plant this week. The marina area has been best, and Power Bait the best bait. Stripers are still mostly slow but Chris O’Keefe, Malibu, landed an 18-8 striper on an A.C. Plug in the marina area. The bass bite has been fair.

Ventura County

LAKE CASITAS--Bass fishing spotty but the lake gave up a 14-plus-pound largemouth bass this week to teenager Alec Friedrichson of Ojai. Catfish remain the best bet, with 21- and 18-pounders reported. Trout action has been excellent too, with lots of limits on Power Bait. Trollers are also scoring in 20-30 feet of water in the Wadleigh Arm. Ed Spafford, Los Angeles, had a limit of trout to two pounds.

LAKE PIRU--Fair to good trout action for trollers working Rapalas and Kastmasters at the surface or still fishing in the coves with night crawlers in 20 feet. Bass bite is fair in 15-25 feet on plastics and night crawlers. Mike Powell, Rancho Cucamonga, caught an 11-8 bass on a plastic. Other species slow.

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout action is very good for boat anglers fishing Power Bait in the east end and shore fishermen in the Mohawk area. Limits are common and fish up to 6-pounds 8-ounces have been taken in the last week, the average fish running better than a pound. Josh Giordiano, Santa Barbara, caught limits Tuesday and Wednesday, trolling broken-back Rapalas and Needlefish. The red-ear perch bite is holding on in deep water but bass action is spotty.

Orange County

IRVINE LAKE--Trout action very good with a lot of limits. Best this week was a 19-pound 6-ounce trout caught by Ken Howe, Corona, on a Roostertail in mid-lake. There were eight other trout exceeding 10 pounds reported. The best action has been along the west shore for both shore and boat anglers. Power Bait, night crawlers, Kastmasters and Rapalas have been producing.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--The parade of trophy trout continues. David Van Vleet of Lakewood landed a 19-pound 8-ounce rainbow on a night crawler at Chris’ Pond, and one 19-7 was caught by Stewart Anderson of Anaheim on Power Bait at the Bubble Hole. The catfish bite has also been very good. Thunder trout, a unique strain of rainbow trout, will be planted this week.

San Bernardino County

JESS RANCH LAKES--Trout fishing is very good. Harry Bates, Covina, landed a three-pound rainbow, but most are running from one to two pounds. Catfish action has slowed.

Riverside County

CORONA LAKE--Trout fishing good to excellent, with three rainbows of 17 pounds or more caught in the last week. Biggest was a 19-pounder caught by Kevin Hayes of Rialto on a night crawler. Best fishing has been early in the morning or late in the evening at the dam and off the far side, and Power Bait has been the hot bait.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass action continues hot, the stripers taking live or frozen shad, and shad-like swim baits. Most of the fish are from two-four pounds but some are running to eight. Mike Zivkovich, Costa Mesa, had nine stripers that weighed 34 pounds 8 ounces. He also landed a two-pound trout on shad. The rainbow bite has been good at Ramp No. 2, and the largemouth bite is fair on night crawlers and crankbaits.

LAKE PERRIS--Bass fishing is slow but improving. Smaller fish are showing on deeply fished plastics, jigs, and live bait in deep water, and a few bigger bass are hitting crawdads, trout-like plugs and swim baits. Joe Massey, Temecula, caught 12-4 and 5-6 bass fishing crawdads off the islands. The trout bite has been fair and crappie fishing remains spotty.

San Diego County

LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout action is fair to good for anglers fishing the Lone Pine Tree with inflated nightcrawlers or Power Bait doused with lots of scent. Best action at midday.

DIXON LAKE--Trout fishing has been excellent. Trout Cove and the pier at Jack Creek have been producing on Power Worms and Power Bait. Top fish an 11-7 rainbow caught by Josh Woods, 14, Escondido. No catfish reported and bass fishing is slow.

LAKE POWAY--Light fishing pressure, but there’s a good trout bite for anglers trolling or shore fishing. Other species slow.
