California high schools will receive $167 million in education and technology grants in the next several weeks, Gov. Gray Davis has announced.

The grants will go toward providing more than 108,000 multimedia computers with Internet access for classrooms.

More than 1,800 high schools will receive grants, and $4 million of the funds will go toward Internet wiring and computer hardware for 155 schools that have agreed to offer online Advanced Placement courses to students. The remainder of the money will go toward adding computers in classrooms.

“As a result of this funding, at every public high school in California there will be about one computer for every five students,” Davis said. “This is a giant step toward bridging the digital divide in high schools.”
